From the east, reaching the airport means crossing the island from end to end. The route takes Highway 40 and the Metropolitan, passes the Décarie interchange, then drops down Highway 520 to the terminals. It moves quickly when it is clear: thirty kilometres can take twenty-five minutes on a Sunday morning.

It is also the busiest stretch of the network on weekdays. Between 7 and 9 a.m. the Metropolitan fills along its whole length and there is no real way around it: Highway 25 and the tunnel only make the trip longer. For a morning flight we leave early and track traffic live to work around individual slowdowns. From the eastern suburbs — Repentigny, L'Assomption, Joliette — add the time it takes to reach the island.

Worth knowing

Frequent questions: East End

1How long does crossing the island take in the morning rush?
Allow double the off-peak time. A trip quoted at twenty-five minutes from Anjou routinely takes fifty to sixty between 7 and 9 a.m. That is why we set the departure from your check-in time, not your flight time.
2Do you go by the Metropolitan or through downtown?
By the Metropolitan in the great majority of cases: it is the only continuous east-west route. Going through downtown and Highway 720 only makes sense for central neighbourhoods, and it is more exposed to closures.
3What about from Repentigny, Joliette or Lavaltrie?
You have to reach the island first, by Highway 40 or Highway 640, before crossing it: at peak times the trip often runs over an hour. Over those distances, book at least the day before so a driver is assigned and can leave on time.
