Traveling with a pet by taxi in Montreal: rules and tips

Dog, cat or other animal? Everything you need to travel peacefully with your pet by taxi in Montreal.

Back to blog

Your dog is going on holiday with you, your cat has a vet appointment, or you are picking up a puppy at the airport. Can you travel with a pet in a Montréal taxi? Yes, in most cases, as long as you let us know and follow a few simple rules. Here is what the law says, what we ask, and how to prepare your companion so the ride goes smoothly.

What the rule says in Québec

  • Service dogs and guide dogs: always accepted, free, without a carrier. It is a legal obligation and we apply it without discussion.
  • Pets: the decision rests with the driver. Most of our drivers accept animals; some are allergic or carry clients who are. That is why we ask you to tell us at booking: we send a driver who accepts your animal.

No supplement is charged for an animal. We only ask that the vehicle be returned clean.

How to book with a pet

  1. In the booking form, mention the animal in the comments field: species, size, carrier or not.
  2. Or call +1 (514) 222-6666 and simply say so.
  3. We confirm with a driver who accepts animals.

For a large dog, ask for an SUV or a minivan: it will travel in the back, in the luggage area, with a blanket.

Carrier, harness or loose?

AnimalRecommendation
Cat, rabbit, small animalClosed carrier, on the seat or the floor
Small dog (under 10 kg)Soft carrier or harness clipped to the seat belt, on the seat
Medium or large dogCar harness or rear area of the SUV / minivan
Service dogAt its owner's feet, unrestrained

A loose animal on the seat is a risk for itself and the driver under braking. A carrier or harness protects everyone, and they are mandatory anyway for the plane or the train.

Preparing the ride

  • A walk before leaving: a dog that has burned energy sleeps in the car.
  • A light meal two hours before, to avoid motion sickness.
  • A towel or blanket on the seat: hair and wet paws stay on it.
  • Water and bags within reach for a break on a long trip.
  • Documents: for the airport, the vaccination record and the airline paperwork in your bag, not in the suitcase in the trunk.
  • Air conditioning: tell the driver if your animal is hot; our vehicles are air-conditioned.

To the airport with a pet

Airlines require an approved carrier and advance check-in. Plan to arrive 30 minutes earlier than usual: checking in an animal is done at the counter, not the kiosk. Our driver drops the carrier with your luggage at departures. On the way back, he waits for you at Door 23 with a vehicle big enough for the carrier.

Long distance with a pet

Québec City, Ottawa, Tremblant: we do long-distance trips with animals. Plan a break every two hours; the driver stops wherever you wish. A minivan offers real space for a large dog on a three-hour trip.

What we expect from you

  • Let us know at booking.
  • A clean, calm animal, in a carrier or harness.
  • A vehicle returned as you found it. Cleaning fees may apply in case of damage.

In short

  • Service dogs: always accepted. Other animals: yes, when you tell us at booking.
  • No supplement; carrier or harness recommended; towel on the seat.
  • SUV or minivan for large dogs, airport and long distance included.

Book your taxi and mention your travel companion in the comments: we take care of the rest.
