Why choose a taxi over a VTC or Uber in Montreal?

In Montreal, transportation options abound. Discover why taxis remain the best choice for your trips.

Back to blog

In Montréal you have options: taxi, Uber, Eva, bus, car sharing. They all have their place. But for an airport transfer, a night ride or a trip with children, the differences between a taxi and a ride-hailing service like Uber are real: price, access, safety, service. Here is an honest comparison, without slogans.

Price: regulated vs. dynamic

This is the most concrete difference. In Québec, taxi fares are set by the Commission des transports du Québec: base fare, price per kilometre, price per minute. They change neither with the weather, nor with demand, nor on Grand Prix night. Between downtown and YUL it is even a flat rate of $49.45 by day.

Ride-hailing platforms apply dynamic pricing: the price climbs when demand climbs. At 11 p.m. on a festival Friday, during a snowstorm, or when several flights land at once, the same ride can cost 1.5 to 3 times more. On a calm Tuesday at 2 p.m., ride-hailing is sometimes a little cheaper. So the question is: when do you need a car? If it is precisely when everyone needs one, the taxi wins.

Airport access

At YUL, the taxi stand at Door 23 is right at the arrivals exit, with an attendant and an organised line. Ride-hailing has a separate, more distant pickup zone, and you must wait for a driver to accept the ride and then arrive. With a delayed flight and suitcases, the continuously moving taxi line is hard to beat. And if you booked, the driver is already waiting, sign in hand if you wish.

The driver and the vehicle

  • Licence: a taxi driver holds a Québec driver's permit with criminal background check and training. Since the 2020 reform, ride-hailing drivers are also regulated, but training requirements are lighter.
  • Vehicle: a taxi is inspected periodically and commercially insured. At Taxi Bonjour, the fleet is made of recent hybrid vehicles, air-conditioned, with winter tires in season.
  • Identification: "Taxi" roof light, visible number, sealed meter. You know what you are getting into.
  • Experience: a driver who does the YUL–downtown run ten times a day knows the shortcuts, the roadworks and Door 23 by heart.

Service: what an app does not do

A platform connects; a taxi company organises. The difference shows on requests that are out of the ordinary:

  • Child seat provided free at booking. Impossible on most platforms.
  • Minivan for six people and their suitcases, chosen in advance.
  • Flight tracking: pickup time adjusts to the plane's delay.
  • Guaranteed advance booking, not an "estimated arrival" a driver can cancel.
  • Long distance to Québec City, Ottawa, Toronto or the United States at an agreed price.
  • Corporate account with monthly invoicing and GST/QST-compliant receipts.
  • A person on the line, 24 hours a day, at +1 (514) 222-6666.

Payment

In a taxi you pay as you like: cash, Visa, Mastercard, Interac, gift certificate. The receipt is printed or emailed. In a ride-hailing car everything goes through the app and the registered card, which is convenient for some and a blocker for others: visitors without a data plan, seniors, business travellers who must use a specific corporate card.

When ride-hailing is a good choice

Let's be fair: for a short ride in town, by day, in calm weather, with a charged phone, a ride-hailing car does the job very well and may cost a little less. If you have no luggage, no children and no tight schedule, both options are equivalent.

When the taxi is the better choice

  1. Transfer to or from the airport, especially with luggage.
  2. Early-morning or late-night flight: you want a guaranteed car, not a driver search.
  3. Bad weather, festival, eve of a holiday: no surge.
  4. Children on board: car seats provided.
  5. Long distance and corporate transfers.
  6. You prefer talking to someone rather than to an app.

In short

  • The taxi has a regulated price that never rises with demand; ride-hailing has dynamic pricing.
  • At YUL, the Door 23 taxi stand is faster and closer.
  • Child seat, minivan, flight tracking, corporate invoice: a booked taxi offers real service.
  • For a short city ride in good weather, both are fine.
